1st phase: planting seeds
The transformation will begin with the planting of "seeds": red pavilions (or boxes) will appear in five places along the esplanade. These seeds will advertise the area's transformation and serve as nodes for growth and development. New Yorkers will participate in the design process and feel part of the waterfront's changes.
2nd phase: writing the esplanade
Everyone wants to leave his or her footprint and everyone has something to say. What if our ideas, our beliefs, our opinions could be written on a long strip on the east river? What if a design process could involve the active participation of the citizens? Then the Esplanade would have a unified, recognizable, and truly public identity.
Rules for writing the esplanade:
1 - Everyone is invited.
2 - There are no limits on age or nationality.
3 - Participants can submit a maximum of 50 words, written in capital letters, to one of the red boxes along the esplanade.
Transfer process:
The public’s submissions will be engraved on a new pedestrian strip that will be built along the entire esplanade as well as a new transparent sound barrier along the FDR Drive. Writing will appear almost everywhere on the pedestrian path, giving the esplanade a recognizable character.
3rd phase: construction
To make the esplanade wide enough to accommodate a variety of activities, new strips will be cantilevered over the water.
To increase waterfront access and recreation, floating, modular platforms will be placed along the esplanade, each dedicated to a separate activity.

Prima fase: piantare i semi
La trasformazione inizierà impiantando dei padiglioni di colore rosso (red boxes) in 5 punti strategici lungo l'esplanade. Questi "semi" mostreranno le trasformazioni in atto nell' area e serviranno quali nodi di crescita e di sviluppo. I cittadini di New York parteciperanno al processo di disegno e si sentiranno parte dei cambiamenti del lungofiume.
Seconda fase: scrivere l'esplanade
Ognuno desidera lasciare la propria impronta ed ognuno ha qualcosa da dire. Cosa succederebbe se le nostre idee, opinioni, pensieri potessero essere scritte lungo una striscia che corre lungo l'East river? Cosa succederebbe se il disegno coinvolgesse i cittadini con un loro partecipazione attiva? Allora l'esplanade avrebbe un'identità pubblica reale, unitaria e riconoscibile.
Regole per scrivere l'esplanade:
1 - Tutti sono invitati.
2 - Non ci sono limiti di età o nazionalità
3 - I partecipanti possono consegnare una busta con i loro pensieri (massimo 50 parole) a una delle scatole rosse lungo l'esplanade.
Processo di trasferimento:
I pensieri della gente verranno trasferiti lungo la passeggiata che costeggerà l'intero East river. Le scritte appariranno ovunque sul sentiero pedonale, dando all'esplanade la riconoscibilità necessaria.
Terza fase: costruzione
Per permettere all'esplanade di avere ovunque la larghezza necessaria per accogliere le numerose attività previste, verranno create aree in aggetto sul fiume. Per accrescere l'accessibilità al fronte fiume delle piattaforme galleggianti appariranno lungo l'esplanade, ognuna dedicata a specifiche attività.
